The illusion of spring

EN. Spring, here, is something ephemeral. That does not last long, the teacher explained while reading the Little Prince , many, many years ago. When French was still the language of nursery rhymes learned in school, the magic trick to get more candy from my granny, and the thousand Lire note from my grandfather. The right price for a portion of a poem by Théophile Gautier learned by heart with difficulty, and performed with all the seriousness and the most solemn tone than a child of eight years is able to use. When spring, the Italian one, was a certainty, a sweet prelude to the summer holidays.
The Belgian spring is, for now, on a stand-by: the sky is gray again, the wind is cold again. Again, I want chocolate and hot tea, when a few days ago I was enjoying a delicate smoothie sitting on the large asymmetrical stairways of the European Commission
And I find myself looking with new eyes at the value of every moment, which, as every Belgian rare sunny morning, must not be lived with uncertainty, but fully. Until make even the fleeting paradoxically everlasting.

Fino a rendere perfino l'effimero paradossalmente duraturo.

First beams of spring ♥ Armani vintage blazer and flower oxfords

EN. I want warm days, days that smell like flowers and rain water drying in the sunlight, and of woods and forests and earth; I want spring days, and that soft, warm shade of sunlight that I cannot seem to find here in Brussels. Here light is always so bright, so revealing; maybe because when the sun manages to break through the wall of clouds it feels it's its duty to shine at his brightest. To make you remember how the warmth of light feels on your cheeks. And tell you that you have not been forgotten, and that even though hidden by the thick layers of fog it has never quite abandoned you.
Belgium has welcolmed spring with actual sun beams, and even though they still don't last a whole day, I could not be happier. Especially when they colour the world in a light shade of apricot pink.
Have a lovely, sunny week you all ♥

Layers: jeans shirt and chunky knits ♥ Les perce-neige

"The snowdrop and primrose our woodlands adorn, and violets bathe in the wet o' the morn."

En. By February the skies of Belgium have covered all the shades of gray normally present in nature. Even my wardrobe has long given up the fight against la grisaille, to adapt to a cold palette that fits the mood of  poor Europe, still under a thick coat of frost. And just when you stop believing that spring will return, and just when even the pale rays of sunlight that filter ever so often through the blanket of clouds can not warm your heart anymore, and even when, as now, a sparse and thin snow falls and melts to the ground, here's the ultimate proof  that spring, however, is just around the corner. Timid bunches of snowdrops giving me a craving for biscuits that only an Italian can understand.

At Christmas I no more desire a rose, Than wish a snow in May's new-fangled shows.

EN. It's amazing how quickly time passes. Christmas has already passed, my weekend in Italy and concluded stored, opened gifts But of this Christmas 2011, in the shadow of the economic crisis, felt in both my beloved countries, the big changes in my and Quentin's lives, I will remember the feeling of calm, warmth and tranquility. Decorate the Christmas tree, attend the Christmas mass, and have a hot chocolate right afterwards, in the middle of the nightWaking up in my bed in my bedroom. The smell of  my mom's coffee. It had been a long time that I was not feeling like that. Happy.
And that's how you hope to feel, for the rest of these festivities.

Talking with ghosts ♥ Oversize H&M Cardigan and Uniqlo Checkered Shirt

The reading of all good books is indeed
like a conversation with the noblest men of past centuries

.EN It's when everything is quiet, at dusk, that I feel more alive. When my heart beats at the sound of one of
my favourite heroines', and in my hand is a slightly abused copy of one of my most beloved novels. One of those books that make you lose the sense of time and space, want to switch jeans for crinoline. Wish for the Cornwall coasts, or for snowy mountains; a walk in a far away city, the one true love, or even just a shawl, and a loose bun. There is no greater pleasure, to me, than being one with yellowish pages. With the author's thoughts. Or to feel part of the superficial routine of a character, or to sympathise with the depth of another one's sorrows. Whether it be born from the pen of Jane Austen, Stieg Larsson or Jack Kerouac.
Sometimes I think that creatures made of ink speak to me more than people in flesh and bones. But I think it's better off this way.

Cat Woman - Primark Kitty Dress

Da me e dai miei gatti.

EN. Sometimes, you need some color in your life. And not just on your fingertips, with a coat or two of Shanghai Red.Sometimes you feel the need to wear a print that screams for you, or a cardigan that makes you feel and look like a ray of sunshine. And not like the pale December sun, but like a real ray of sunshine. How many adventures we had in such a short time, me and my improbable cats print tunic. (That you've seen here, while the brogues you've seen here) It makes children laugh. It makes you get stared at by girls on the subway, who are probably undecided between love and hate for the cats. But they most likely end up loving them. It makes me feel like Amélie Poulin, or a character by Ai Yazawa, it makes me feel as if my  incurable dreamer soul, forever thorn between a world of my own and the real life, is laid bare. And sometimes, just sometimes, it's just what I need. Between a yawn and a cup of coffee, good Monday to you all. From me and my cats.
